12. Fanfare for Salpinx Trio
The twelfth and final performance of the ‘Overtone Live Concert’ is a unique trio of salpinx (bronze bugles) from Classical Iron Age Greece circa. 450 B.C.
These accurate reproductions were made (and also played here) by Dr. Peter Holmes. They provide a wonderful glimpse of the power and cultural musical wealth of the ancient Greek World. There was a thrill in the church as the salpinx trio paraded up the aisle blasting out a fanfare of celebration. Left to Right before they turn on the altar – Joachim Schween – German Lur player, – John Meskell– multi-instrumentalist including modern and ancient instruments. Dr. Peter Holmes: engineer, publisher, trumpet and saxophone player who has been making and playing reproductions of ancient instruments since the 1960s. Peter Holmes Latest Publications
Rod Callan – Sound Engineer Rod has recorded both original and reproduction ancient horns and trumpets with Ancient Music Ireland since the research first began over thirty years ago. In this instance he travelled from Penylan Studios in Wales to record the ‘Overtone Live Acoustic’ concert in Galway. His expertise and experience with the instruments perfectly captured the complexity and multi-colours of the sound. Penylan Studios
