Kerry – Adharc

circa 750 AD

Kerry Adharc, Bronze Age side-blown horn, key of E flat, made in 2010.

This magnificent example of a horn is one of the Clogherclemin hoard, Co. Kerry, in the South of Ireland. The design is taken from a drawing of an original made by George Eoghan for this book ‘Hoards of the Later Bronze Age’. The new instrument is the last to be made by O’Dwyer in 2010. The casting is probably the best that was achieved in all the horns and trumpets made by Ancient Music Ireland. It is closest in weight and evenness of finish to the original that inspired it. The sound it produces is unusually rich and full and plays in the key of E-flat.
